Electronic tax collection empowers Californians

California State Treasurer's Office implements largest electronic state tax collection platform in the US

The challenge

The California State Treasurer's Office manages the collection of tax and bill payments for a wide range of state agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Justice.

The Treasurer's Office saw the need for a new, flexible and more efficient way of managing these collections – one that would allow citizens to make secure payments with ease and also provide cost savings for the State. In addition, the system had to be customizable to the needs of all California State Agencies, both large and small.

The solution

Citi's Global Transaction Services analyzed the individual needs of each State Agency and used its global technology platform to implement a highly flexible Electronic Funds Transfer system.

Citi worked with Fidelity Information Services (FIS), a leading provider of electronic payment processing systems to governments, to deliver the project.

The new system is the largest electronic state tax collection platform in the US, handling up to three million transactions every month.

The solution also allows FIS to provide 24/7 customer support via telephone and Internet.

The result

Citizens and businesses now have an easily accessible and secure way to pay bills and taxes, either online, using Interactive Voice Response or via bank payment services.

The State's systems have also been streamlined substantially.
