The Citi Foundation has a long tradition of providing support to communities affected by disasters. Our disaster response strategy consists of three complementary components: building the financial resilience of individuals, families and communities to weather disasters, providing funds for immediate relief, and effectively directing resources to community economic rebuilding efforts. Within our preparedness portfolio, we seek to identify and fund innovative disaster mitigation efforts that align with our financial inclusion goals. Within immediate relief, we seek to develop strategic alliances with key organizations able to deploy relief work at a minutes’ notice. As a member of the American Red Cross’ Annual Disaster Giving Program, for example, our support ensures that the organization is able to respond to provide shelter, health services and other emergency and reconstruction assistance to those affected by the 70,000 disasters the institution responds to each year. In rebuilding, we seek to identify opportunities post-disaster to assist individuals, families and communities in rebuilding their livelihoods—whether jumpstarting economic activity by supporting the development of new enterprises or assisting microfinance institutions to design and provide impacted clients with appropriate products and services.
