London Citigroup has appointed Stuart Popham, the former Senior Partner, worldwide, of Clifford Chance, as Vice Chairman of Banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He will join Citi in July after leaving Clifford Chance next month.
He brings a wealth of experience and senior corporate, governmental and regulatory relationships to Citi, where he will play a key role in the continued expansion of the EMEA banking business.
"Stuart's board-room level experience exemplifies the emphasis we have placed on senior client relationships and our value-driven approach to delivering global, multi-product and service capabilities to our key clients," said James Bardrick, co-head of EMEA banking. "He has led and has vast experience in overseeing successful and growing client partnerships based upon the delivery of advisory services by many professionals in multiple geographies. In addition, his deep understanding of the banking industry, plus senior government and regulatory contacts, will be hugely beneficial to us in this rapidly changing business environment."
Popham spent his entire 35-year career at Clifford Chance, where he was senior partner from 2003 until his retirement in December 2010. Prior to being named senior partner, he led the firm's global banking and finance practice. Earlier in his career, he led Clifford Chance's London Finance and Securities Group. He was named a Partner in 1984.
"Stuart's hire is a key appointment for Citi as we continue to grow our UK business. He brings an array of top-tier relationships, forged during his 35 years at Clifford Chance, as well as global expertise in finance and securities," said Manuel Falco, co-head of EMEA banking at Citi. "This appointment is further evidence of Citi's ambition in the EMEA banking space."
Popham commented: "I am particularly pleased to be joining Citi in this role. I look forward to working with the highly successful banking team and developing opportunities in an expanding business area. After a truly satisfying career at Clifford Chance, this is a really exciting move for me."
Alongside his duties at Clifford Chance, Popham is a member of the Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) International Advisory Board, immediate past Chairman of the London Council of the CBI, Chairman of TheCityUK and a Council Member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
