Pacoima, California Continuing its longtime support of Habitat for Humanity and hard-working families in California, Citibank recently provided $25,000 to help the local Habitat for Humanity complete the second phase of its Pacoima housing community, which will eventually total 61 homes.
With this new phase of the Pacoima project, Habitat for Humanity's affiliate serving north Los Angeles County will be among only 5 percent of the nearly 3,000 worldwide Habitat affiliates to reach the milestone of completing over 100 homes – and Citibank has been with them all the way. Citibank, which has sponsored other homes and has been a consistent sponsor of the local affiliates Builder's Ball, has also provided hundreds of volunteers over the years to help housing builds in the North East Valley and beyond.
"This achievement is a result of the commitment of thousands of volunteers and countless supporters and donors over the last several years," said Jack Shine, Habitat board chairman. "This includes many friends from our Citibank community. We've made great progress, but there's so much more to do."
The North Los Angeles affiliate, which serves the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, has established four other Habitat communities, providing 47 single-family homes to needy families. At the Pacoima neighborhood, Habitat has completed construction on 20 homes, which are already occupied. The second phase of 17 homes is also nearing completion, with construction on the final 24 homes scheduled to begin by this fall. The completed 61-home community will adhere to the local Habitat for Humanity "neighborhood model," which involves building many homes clustered together and linking the families, before and after they move in, to a variety of neighborhood social service agencies that help build life skills for increased self-sufficiency.
At an Aug. 4 check presentation, Lisa Deloney, Executive Vice President of Citibank's Metro Southern California Division, spoke about the importance of the event and of Citibank's longtime support of Habitat for Humanity – highlighting Citi's ongoing commitment to the American Dream and to being an active member of the community. Not only do Citibank employees serve as volunteer builders at Habitat, Citibank provides Habitat families with education through free seminars and other programs that provide the guidance they need to achieve their goals and dreams.
"We offer many workshops on a variety of subjects, including health education, money management, English-as-a-Second Language, and computer skills," said Bill Kennedy, Santa Clarita Planning Commission Chairman and board member of the San Fernando-Santa Clarita Valley affiliate. "Community partners like Citibank are a critical resource for our families."
"This is working well," Shine added. "We've had no defaults on any of our homes, most of our high school-age kids are going on to college, and some of our parents are going back to school."
"We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity and this incredible project in Pacoima, which will provide much-needed homes to hard-working families," said Deloney. "At Citibank, we are committed to making communities better where we work and live."
