Citigroup’s Sustainable Paper Initiatives
In 2004 and 2005, Citigroup used paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in our annual Citizenship Report. FSC is an organization that has set the international gold standard for environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management. The FSC certification verifies that the paper has been produced in a sustainable manner. The particular paper that Citigroup selected for the report was manufactured by Mohawk Paper Mills using 100% post consumer waste and renewable energy provided by wind power.

To produce the 2005 Citizenship Report, we purchased 55,911 pounds of FSC-certified paper. By using this 100% post consumer recycled paper, Citigroup and its supplier:
  • Saved over 386 million BTUs of energy;
  • Eliminated over 59,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Saved more than 284,000 gallons of water;
  • Prevented over 30,224 pounds of solid waste; and
  • Conserved 670 trees.
Also, the wind energy used to produce the paper was the fossil fuel equivalent of 5.48 barrels of crude oil or 1.25 tons of coal.

In a separate project, Citigroup and the Alliance for Environmental Innovation, a project of Environmental Defense, partnered in 2002 to reduce the environmental impact of copy and printer paper used by Citigroup. We selected a paper that is 30% post-consumer recycled, and all Citibank and Corporate and Investment Bank locations in the U.S. have adopted this paper as their standard copy and printer paper.

In 2005, Citigroup purchased more than 6,596 tons of copy paper. By purchasing recycled paper instead of virgin fiber paper, we*:
  • Saved over 33 billion BTUs of total energy – equivalent to the amount of residential energy used by 363 homes per year;
  • Eliminated over 4 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalents) – equivalent to the amount released annually by 379 cars;
  • Prevented more than 17 million gallons of wastewater – equivalent to the amount needed to fill 26 swimming pools;
  • Prevented over 2 million pounds of solid waste – equivalent to the amount that would fill 79 garbage trucks; and
  • Conserved over 6,800 tons of wood – equivalent to 47,491 trees.
* Environmental impact estimates were made using the Environmental Defense Paper Calculator. For more information visit http://www.papercalculator.org.
