Turkey
History
Citibank A.S ('Citi') was first established in Turkey in 1975 and began to operate as a branch in 1981. Prior to this and as early as 1946, Citi was involved in a number of development projects such as motorway financings, power plants and dams.
As the Turkish financial market grew in the 1980s, we expanded our Markets & Banking business by introducing new products and services. In 1996, we launched our Global Consumer Group in Turkey. In 1998, we began serving small and medium sized enterprises across Turkey.
2006 was a year of growth for us in Turkey as we opened 30 new branches (doubling our existing branch network), hired new employees and introduced new products and services. We now serves our corporate, SME and consumer clients with 54 branches across 13 cities in Turkey.
In 2006, we acquired a 20 per cent stake in Akbank, the country's largest privately owned bank. This strategic partnership reaffirms our commitment to Turkey.
