Trinidad & Tobago: Citigroup and NGOs Making A Difference
Dennis Evans, Managing Director of Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking, Trinidad and Tobago, recently hosted an NGO Appreciation Awards Breakfast, at the bank’s headquarters at Queen’s Park East, Port of Spain.
The event was attended by executives from FEEL, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, Moms for Literacy, Red Cross Society, United Way, and YMCA. Representatives from each of these NGOs were presented with Citigroup NGO Appreciation Awards, in recognition of the service by their organizations to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The NGO members also took the opportunity to discuss common challenges, and identify opportunities where they could work together.
Citigroup has developed relationships locally with these NGOs over the years, as they are directly involved in the kind of work, which falls in line with the strategic focus of the Citigroup Foundation: financial education, educating the next generation, and building communities and entrepreneurs.
Following is a summary of the projects which the bank is partnering or has partnered with these NGOs, either through Citigroup Foundation grants, or local sponsorships and grants.
FEEL – TT$150,000.00 Citigroup Foundation Grant for “Alleviation of Poverty Food Program” (2006), and currently TT$20,000.00 in annual local grants under a three-year Deed of Covenant

Red Cross Society – A total to date of TT$560,000.00 as the major sponsor of the annual Red Cross Children’s Carnival, the largest annual fundraiser of the Red Cros (1996-2006)
United Way – approximately TT$120,000.00 annually through local monthly employee contributions, and the bank’s matching grants
YMCA – TT$140,000.00 Foundation Grant for the program “Sustainable Thinking for the creation of youthful entrepreneurial communities” (2004 and still in progress)
Donations to these specific NGOs total over TT$1.5 Million. In addition, Citigroup in Trinidad and Tobago has a 40 year history of significant contributions to many other organizations in the areas of education, Community development, health and human services, the arts and culture arena, sports, and business and economic development.
Clive Pantin, CEO of the Foundation for the Enhancement and Enrichment of Life (FEEL), said, “Citigroup is a unique organization, which bends backwards to assist the underprivileged. And while recognizing that as a financial institution they must make money, they are willing to share this with the NGOs who help those in need.”
The bank believes that the private sector has a critical role to play in fighting poverty, and improving the quality of life for those who live and work in the community. Dennis Evans, managing director of Citigroup Trinidad and Tobago said, “By partnering with NGOs and combining our resources of funding, program management and employee volunteerism, Citigroup believes that together we can make a real difference in our local communities.“
