Financial Times/Citi Private Bank Announce Environmental Awards Winners

London – The FT and Citi Private Bank have announced the winners of their inaugural environmental awards. Leading healthcare company, F. Hoffman la Roche (Roche) was named as the winning large cap company in Europe and energy services company, Consolidated Edison Inc (Con Edison), as the leading large cap entry from the U.S. Mackies Ltd, a farming and food business based in Scotland was rewarded as most carbon efficient small and medium sized enterprise in Europe.

The FT/Citi Private Bank and the panel of judges would like to congratulate the winners of these awards which are the first to show an improvement in carbon efficiency. Carbon efficiency was measured by reduction of carbon emissions in operations when compared to turnover and compared to their peers. Technical support was provided by environmental research company, Trucost Plc which provides quantitative research on environmental impacts.

Roche improved its carbon efficiency by 31% with an absolute reduction of 19% in its direct emissions, equating to a total reduction in direction emissions of 120,000 tons of C02. The company has shown several innovative ways to improve its carbon efficiency across its operations. These include adopting new building technologies, holding a best practice Energy Conservation summit for its North and South American operations and showing a commitment to phasing out all halogenated hydrocarbons from cooling systems by 2015.

Con Edison was awarded for showing an improvement of carbon efficiency of 20% with an absolute reduction in direct emissions of 17%, amounting to 1.3million tons of CO2. The reductions have been achieved by replacing old technology with natural gas burning combustion turbines as well as the application of cogeneration technologies which reduce GHG emissions per unit of energy output. In addition, Con Edison is committed to voluntarily reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and has already achieved this by reducing its Sulfur Hexafluoride emissions by 62.5%.

The small and medium enterprise award was given to Scottish farming and food business, Mackies Ltd for its commitment to generating 100% of its energy requirement through wind turbines. The company produces a surplus of energy from its private wind turbines, and supplies enough electricity to the national grid to power 1000 homes. Its ability to generate its own energy requirements, and supply renewable energy to the national grid, meant an improvement in carbon efficiency of nearly 70%, and an absolute improvement of 66%.

As well as rewarding carbon efficiency, the awards promote transparency from companies in measuring and recording reductions and other initiatives. European companies provided the majority of entries across a wide range of sectors, mainly made up of the large cap companies. National Grid, BT Group, Imperial Tobacco and Novo Nordisk all submitted strong entries, making the final shortlist.

U.S. entries were dominated by large cap companies from the high tech sector, showing an encouraging recognition of the importance of environmental efficiency. Other U.S. companies to be commended for an award were Xerox and General Motors.

The FT, Citi Private Bank and the panel of judges would also to like to commend companies from Asia Pacific which entered the awards particularly for their use of innovative technologies however they felt that there were too few entries to usefully compare results. The judges fully encourage Asian Pacific companies to show their commitment to measuring and reducing emissions by entering in next year's environmental awards.

"We were impressed by the quality of entries to these awards and the commitment shown by these businesses to tackling the challenge of carbon emissions. We congratulate this year's winners for their schemes and dedication, and look forward to building on the success of these inaugural awards next year." John Ridding, CEO, Financial Times.
