Citi Bahrain Volunteers Support "Go Green Bahrain" on Global Community Day

Manama – Citi Bahrain volunteers joined more than 55,000 Citi volunteers on a single day (Nov 17th) at more than 1,000 events in over 600 cities in 100 countries for the company's second annual "Global Community Day." 220 volunteers in Bahrain, including employees and their families and friends got together to plant 200 trees in Manama. H.E. Joseph Adam Areli and Mr A.Hakeem Al Shummari had joined Citi volunteers in their special day.

Citi's Global Community Day is a worldwide effort involving hundreds of projects in hundreds of cities around the world. Recognizing that many Citi employees volunteer year-round in their communities, Global Community Day celebrates Citi's volunteer spirit on one-day worldwide. Local volunteer teams worked on a variety of projects addressing specific community needs including literacy, housing, environmental protection, nutrition, and health care.

"Citi is committed to mobilizing the enthusiasm and talents of our employees so that they can make a positive difference in the communities where we work together. Citi's Global Community Day is company-wide, with tens of thousands of volunteers in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. It is a symbol of the many ways we make a difference, through our business practices, our philanthropy and our volunteerism," said Pamela Flaherty, President and Chief Executive Officer, Citi Foundation and Director, Corporate Citizenship.

This evergreen SIMAROUBA GLAUCA tree with its eco friendly characteristics effectively checks soil erosion and helps convert solar energy into biochemical energy while checking over-heating of soil surface year-round particularly in summer time. This is essential for the Bahraini environment which experiences hot summers. Like other evergreen trees, this tree is effective in converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into oxygen and contributes to the reduction of the green house effect. This plant was promoted by " Art of Living" Bahrain Chapter.

Mayank Malik, Citi Bahrain Chief Executive Officer, said: "The Global Community Day is one way to demonstrate our resolve to fulfill our duty as a responsible corporate citizen in Bahrain and elsewhere in the region. We are committed to be an integral part of the Middle Eastern societies where we've maintained a presence for more than half-a-century, and we intend on being socially active and serving the community on an ongoing basis."
