Mexico: Banamex Delivers 2007 Economics Awards
 
Mexico City – Yesterday evening, Banco Nacional de México delivered the prizes of the 56th edition of Banamex Economics Awards.
 
Parallel to the implicit acknowledgement and pride of receiving such an award – some of the most notable and remarkable economists in Mexico, starting during the second half of the last century to date, have received the Banamex Economics Award – the award winners in the Research category received $250,000 pesos for first place and $200,000 for second place. In the Bachelor's Degree Thesis category, the awards were $100,000 pesos for first place and $75,000 for second place. In all cases including the Summa cum Laude, the winners also received a certificate acknowledging their work.
 
The panel responsible for the analysis and evaluation of the large number of works presented for the contest was integrated by: Ph.D. Javier Beristáin Iturbide, CEO of Afore XXI; Ph.D. Victor Carreón Rodriguez, Director of the Economic Division of the Economic Development and Research Center, Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo Económico (CIDE); Ph.D. Agustín Carstens Carstens, Minister of Finance (SHCP); Ph.D. Arturo Fernandez Perez, Rector of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM); Ph.D. Daniel Flores Curiel, Director of the School of Economics of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León University (UANL); Ph.D. Ramón Lecuona Valenzuela, Director of the Business School and School of Economics of the Universidad Anahuac University; Ph.D. Guillermo Ortiz Martinez, governor of the Central Bank; Master's degree holder Kristiano Raccanello, Head of the School of Economics of the Universidad de las Américas University; the Engineer Hector Rangel Domene, Chairman of the Center for Economic Research for the private sector, Centro de Estudios Económicos del Sector Privado (CEESP); PH.D. Alejandro Rodriguez Arana, Head of the Economics Department of the Universidad Iberoamericana University; Ph.D. Jaime Sempere Campello, Director of Economic Studies of the Colegio de México; and Ph.D. Eduardo Sojo Garza-Aldape, Minister of Economy.
 
The ceremony was headed by Ph.D. Alejandro Werner Wainfeld, under-secretary of Finance and Enrique Zorrilla, CEO of Banamex.
 
Alejandro Werner congratulated the winners for the quality of their works, and talked about the important work done by Banamex by having delivered such a prestigious award for the last 56 years.
 
Banamex CEO Enrique Zorrilla referred to the important fact that the bank, aside from its job as a financial intermediary, is dedicated to "promoting and spreading serious and important academic studies and analysis, to allow for a better understanding of the economic problems in Mexico, and at the same time, visualize future upcoming trends." He also commented that the predominantly microeconomic subject matter in this 56th edition of the Banamex Economics Awards is perhaps a signal of the stability achieved these past few years in Mexico that has allowed centering the greatest concern of the economic researchers onto practical matters.
