Pakistan: Citi Employees Volunteer Two Days at "The Citizens Foundation" for Paint-A-School Program
Over 90 Citibank Volunteers Paint "The Citizens Foundation" Primary School in Machar Colony
Would you wake up at 7:00 a.m. on a weekend to paint a primary school in one of Karachi's largest slum settlements? That is exactly what 91 employees, their families and friends did at a "The Citizens Foundation" (TCF) School in Machar Colony, Karachi, this Saturday and Sunday – where they scraped, painted and polished from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to revamp a school building used by over 100 children.
Machar or "mosquito" Colony, home to 700,000 people, the majority of them children, is easily one of Karachi's most neglected areas in terms of housing, hygiene, medical and overall living conditions. The sight of children playing in huge garbage dumps and sewage water is shockingly common. Perhaps the one ray of light in this otherwise dismal scenario is the presence of three fully equipped TCF-run schools, providing education to over 700 children.
However, as the TCF operates on charity, refurbishment and upkeep of its campuses tend to become tasks that require some extra help from its generous supporters and friends. Given this, and in keeping with its commitment to community involvement via volunteerism, Citi Pakistan jumped at the opportunity to help and hence "The Citi-TCF Paint-A-School" program. With volunteers arranging free paint courtesy ICI Pakistan Limited, the program really did acquire an employee-volunteer flavor and with more than 45 people coming together on each of the two days ear-marked for the project's completion, the "Citi Paint-a-School" program was clearly a winner.
The principal of the school Madam Mussarat and the TCF Head Office staff were thrilled at the results of the volunteer's work. Speaking at the occasion, Principal Mussarat said, "This is a one of a kind event – aside from cleaning up the school, which is commendable on its own – Citi has really motivated our students who don't normally get the opportunity to mix with appropriate role models."
The two day activity ended with a small concert prepared by the students of the school and a vote of thanks by one of TCF Managers, who said, "I would like to thank you personally for doing a great job at the ‘Paint-A-School' activity. It was a very successful event and the main stakeholders – students and teachers of Machar Colony School – really appreciated Citi's efforts. We hope we can continue these activities on a long-term basis providing benefit to as many TCF campuses as possible."
"Citi is committed to mobilizing the enthusiasm and talents of our employees so that they can make a positive difference in the communities where we work together. This ‘Paint-A-School' initiative symbolizes the many ways we make a difference, through our business practices, our philanthropy and our volunteerism," said Citi Country Officer & Managing Director Zubyr Soomro, who along with Corporate Bank Head Arif Usmani and several of Citi's senior management made up the volunteer brigade.
Citi employees are encouraged to devote time to community service and celebrate such efforts with families and friends. Citi not only supports volunteerism but rewards it through a unique Volunteer Incentive Program, dedicated volunteer days and a unique Volunteer Management System.
