Citi Indonesia Doubles Its Support for Financial Education for the Poor Program
Jakarta Citi announced today a grant of US$86,000 to double the reach and impact of the Financial Education for the Poor program in Indonesia.
Launched in 2007, this first-of-its-kind initiative in Indonesia teaches microentrepreneurs basic financial management skills so that they can grow and manage their small enterprises more effectively. They also learn how to secure and utilize low-cost credit loans from cooperatives, people's credit banks (BPRs) and microfinance institutions.
"We believe financial education should be made available to everyone in the community, and we are delighted to double our support for this groundbreaking initiative," said Mr. Shariq Mukhtar, Citi Indonesia Country Officer at the launch event.
The Financial Education for the Poor training programs are run by the Management School of the Faculty of Economics of University Indonesia (LMFEUI), which has relationships with over 150 cooperatives and microfinance institutions that deal directly with microfinance clients.
"Our goal is to involve more people and communities in Sumatra, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya and we hope to double the 150,000 participation rate from 2007," said Dr. Budi W. Soetjipto, LMFEUI Managing Director.
In addition to the "Basic Financial Knowledge and Skills" and "Savings: You Can Do It," three new modules will be added this year – "Credit Management: Manage with care," "Bank Services: Know your choices," and "Financial Negotiation: Talk with confidence." Also new in 2008 is a trainer assessment initiative and an impact survey involving microfinance clients.
Based on figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (March 2007), over 37 million Indonesians live below the poverty line.
With funding from the Citi Foundation, Citi supports similar programs in China, India, Philippines, Vietnam, and well as Pakistan, Russia, Uganda and several countries in Latin America.
