Indonesia Will Weather Global Economic Slowdown Say Experts at Citi's Outlook 2008 Seminar

Jakarta – Mari Pangestu, Minister of Trade, Republic of Indonesia said Indonesia would be able to sustain economic growth even if a global recession becomes reality. She made her comments as the guest speaker at Citi Indonesia's Economic and Political Outlook 2008 event held for clients and the press.

She said, "Our policies related to infrastructure development, job creation and trade are designed to enhance productivity and efficiency.

"Because of these, we believe we are well positioned to grow our export sector. In addition, given rising production costs in China, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors."

Other notable economic and political experts who spoke at the seminar included: Bambang Prijambodo, Director of Macro Planning, Ministry of National Planning/Bappenas; Moh Siong Sim, Director, Emerging Markets Strategy, Citi Singapore; and Anies Baswedan, Rector, Paramadina University.

In his macro view presentation, Citi's Moh Siong Sim said Asian markets like Indonesia are more likely to be impacted by rising inflation than an economic slowdown in the U.S. Meanwhile, Mr. Anies Baswedan called for the introduction of more pro-business policies.

Today's outlook seminar is the eighth annual event organized by Citi. In his opening remarks, Citi Indonesia Markets & Banking Head, Tigor M. Siahaan said, "We are proud to host this annual event which aims to provide in-depth and comprehensive analysis on the key macroeconomic and political issues.

"By listening and engaging with today's experts, we hope that our clients will be able to use this data and information to fine tune their business plans for the year ahead."
