Citibank Korea Donates KRW 50 million to Seoul Green Trust
Donation Part of "Green Citi – Nurturing Our Community Forest" Campaign which Encourages Switch to e-Statements
Seoul Citibank Korea Inc. (CKI) today donated KRW50 million to Seoul Green Trust (SGT), a non-profit organization that promotes tree planting in urban areas. This is part of the "Green Citi - Nurturing Our Community Forest" Campaign, which was introduced six months ago to encourage Citibank customers to switch to electronic-based statements.
The "Green Citi" Campaign is an environmental campaign to reduce the amount of paper used, promote recycling and environmental protection as well as create a ‘green community' in the neighborhoods.
The fund donation ceremony was followed by tree planting for the 7th Community Forest in Kwangjang district. A total of 160 people took part, including Yung-ku Ha, CKI CEO; Myung Ok Kim, CKI Executive Vice President, Operation Division; Sergio Zanatti, Cards Business Director ; Branch Managers and employees of Kwangjang and Gueui branches; Joon Ha Yoon, Director of SGT (Co-chair of the Green Seoul Citizens' Committee); Hyung-jin Kim, Board member and lawyer of SGT (Yulchon Attorneys at Law) ; Gwang-bin Choi, Director for Landscape Architecture Division, Green Seoul Bureau of the Seoul Metropolitan Government; Song Hak Jung, Chairman of Kwangjin district ; and local residents and students from neighboring schools. The 540m² site selected for the CKI's community forest event this year is a school district of Seoul Yangjin Elementary School and Middle School, located at the mouth of Mountain A-cha.
In his speech, CKI CEO Ha said, "I am very excited to see that the idea of reducing paper use by receiving e-statements is resulting in trees being planted in our neighborhood, thanks to the joint efforts of businesses, consumers, civic groups, and the municipal government. It is indeed our shared responsibility to protect the environment for this and next generations."
The Kwnagjang-dong Community Forest has been planned and designed in close collaboration with CKI, SGT, government offices, schools and residents, and will be managed by SGT together with the "Community Forest Guardians" composed of CKI employees, students of Yangjin elementary and middle schools, and Kwangjang-dong Hyundai apt. Women Association.
The Campaign is part of a larger civic initiative that brings together a coalition of citizens, businesses, and government officials to plant trees and nurture forests on unused, marginal lands, and is funded by businesses, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Seoul citizens. The SGT has developed six community forests in 2007, and plans to create five more of such forests in Dongdaemun-gu, Kangdong-gu, Dobong-gu, and Kangseo-gu with the Kwangjang Community Forest being the first in its plan for the first half of 2008.
