Earth Day with Citi Poland: Customers Give Up Paper Statements, Bank Handlowy to Plant 40,000 Trees in the Spring

On April 22, 2008, as part of the Earth Day celebration, Citi Handlowy, together with its employees and invited guests, will inaugurate a tree planting project called "More Trees Thanks To You." Tomorrow, in the Uroczysko-Bemowo forest, the participants of this initiative will plant the first few hundred oaks. And that is just a beginning because as part of the "More Trees Thanks To You" project this spring as many as 40,000 trees will be planted in the Mazowieckie Province alone.

"Citi Handlowy is a socially responsible bank and this puts a great responsibility on us. Our latest initiative called ‘More Trees Thanks To You' is a perfect example of what business can do for the environment," said Slawomir S. Sikora, CEO of Citi Handlowy. "'More Trees Thanks To You' is a comprehensive program promoting environmental protection through various activities – every day we encourage our clients to give up paper statements and tomorrow we will be planting trees together," he said. The main objective of the "More Trees Thanks To You" Program is to promote pro-environmental behavior among the Bank's employees, clients and local communities. As part of the program, Citi Handlowy has undertaken to plant a tree on behalf of each client who has gone paperless and switched to e-statement. The tree-planting project will be inaugurated on Earth Day.

"We are proud of our clients. They not only give up paper statements in favor of electronic ones, but also they want to take an active role in our project and plant trees with us. With such great enthusiasm of Citi Handlowy clients, we will manage to establish not only one but many forests," said Sonia Wedrychowicz–Horbatowska, Vice President of the Management Board responsible for consumer banking at Citi Handlowy.

"More Trees Thanks To You" is a partnership program of Citi Handlowy, its Kronenberg Foundation and the "Our Earth" Foundation. As part of this initiative in the spring of 2008 some areas of the Mazowieckie Province, which suffers from the lack of "green corridors" (enabling the migration of species and plants), will be afforested. Other afforesting initiatives aimed at creating or enhancing "green corridors" are also planned in subsequent years in other provinces.

Trees are planted under the supervision and according to the plan of afforestation/reforestation and creation of "green corridors" approved by Lasy Panstwowe/The State Forests/. All tree-planting participants take part in special workshops aimed at increasing the knowledge on the importance of trees and forests for the environment, climate protection and economy.
