Taipei Citi's commitment to environmental protection in Taiwan was further reinforced with the announcement of its "Citi Wetland Park Project" last week. Under this three-year initiative, Citi will donate NT$3 million to support Society of Wilderness (SOW) led restoration projects in three parts of the Wugu Wetland – Floodway Ecological Park, Luzhou Embankment Area, and the Big Ecological Pool Area.
At the media announcement, Mr. Victor Kuan, Citibank Country Business Manager, said: "Citi is proud to partner with SOW to support this program because the Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance. In addition to ongoing clean up projects, SOW will also run conservation research and pilot initiatives.
He added, "Our employees will also play an active role in many projects and together, our long-term goal is to make the wetland a cleaner and safer habitat."
Rung-Hsiao Lai, Vice Chairman, SOW said Citi's support will enable SOW to expand its range of programs.
"Thanks to volunteer support and limited funding, we have made good progress in our restoration efforts since 2006. With Citi's support however, we can increase our activities and our goal is to reintroduce more animals and insects back to the wetlands."
Lending his support for the wetland restoration was Taipei County Mayor, Chou Hsi-wei who called on other business groups to get involved.
"I urge business organizations and people from all walks of life to get involved in environmental protection programs in Taipei County. I am delighted to see the example set by Citi and hope they will motivate others to follow suit."
Citi is an active promoter and implementer of eco-friendly initiatives and recent programs have focused on cartridge recycling and energy and paper saving (notably a campaign requesting customers to switch from paper to e-statements).
In recent years, a series of environmental activities involving many volunteers have also been run. As well as helping to preserve a reservation area in Taipei City for the past six years, employees have also participated in tree planting projects and launched education campaigns via the intranet and blogs.
Furthermore, the "Citi Environment Month" was introduced last April that included volunteer programs and more internal education programs. Building on the success of the 2007 program, the 2008 environment month has seen more than 300 employees participating in a range of activities. More programs will also be introduced throughout the year.
