Citi Increases its Commitment to Lebanon Youth

New $35,000 Grant for Injaz Lebanon in Support of Youth Economic & Financial Education

Beirut – Citi Lebanon today announced a $35,000 grant to support the local chapter of Junior Achievement Worldwide (JAW), which is in its 7th year of operations in Lebanon. Extended by Citi Foundation, Citi's social investment arm, the grant will be used to support Youth Economic & Financial education in Lebanon.

The project aims to empower 7th to 12th grade students in public and private schools and provide them with the life skills needed to enter and succeed in the job market. Students are trained on communication, decision-making, problem solving and teamwork skills. The "Leadership Program" introduces them to the concept of "leadership" and helps them identify the characteristics of leaders, using real and practical examples while the Personal Economics program teaches them how to assess their personal interests and skills, how to explore career options, how to enhance their job hunting skills, and how to manage personal and family finances.

Students also execute a community service project of their choice. This is an important part of the project because it helps students better understand the environment in which they are currently living, and to apply their acquired skills in a real-life simulation.

Mr. Kamal Katra, Chairman of Injaz Lebanon, said: "We aim to reach 1000 students during in 2008. Thanks to Citi's continued support, we will be able to reach our goal in empowering youth in underprivileged areas."

Walter Siouffi, General Manager for Citi in Lebanon and Advisory Board Member of Injaz, said: "Citi supports Junior Achievement in many countries around the world. Our latest contribution to Lebanon reflects our strong support for Injaz Lebanon's youth training initiatives conducted across the country. The project falls within our objectives to assist in building the skill sets of the next generation and in preparing them to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive job market."

Citi's presence in Lebanon dates back to the 1950s. Since re-establishing its fully licensed branch in Beirut over ten years ago, the Bank has evolved into an active corporate citizen, with a particular interest in supporting financial literacy and education.

Recently, Citi and the Citi Foundation announced a 10-year, $200 million global financial education commitment, the formation of a new Office of Financial Education and a global initiative designed to encourage its 300,000 employees around the world to devote time to support financial education and other charitable causes. Under the new initiative, employees may take a day off from work to volunteer for non-profit organizations in their communities.
