ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS

Encompass a variety of unique asset classes but exclude traditional, long-only investments in stocks or bonds. In general, major categories of alternative investments include hedge funds, private equity and real estate. They are especially attractive in economic environments in which more traditional stock and bond investments are producing uneven returns because they offer opportunities to reduce portfolio volatility through diversification and enhance risk-adjusted returns. At the same time, the world of alternative investments can be daunting. These unique investments are complex, can be difficult to analyze and require significant monitoring. Alternative investments have the potential to offer enhanced returns, but they must be selected carefully. For many traditional asset classes, the difference in performance between the top and bottom quartile funds is relatively modest. With alternative investments, however, the differences can be substantial.
