Liberty Alliance
![]()
Liberty was formed in 2001 by approximately 30 organizations to establish open standards, guidelines and best practices for identity management. Today it continues to focus on these founding objectives, with a global membership of more than 150 organizations, including technology vendors, consumer-facing companies, educational organizations and governments from around the world, as well as hundreds of additional organizations that participation in Liberty's various open community Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Its specifications, Liberty Federation and Liberty Identity Web Services, and best practice guidelines have been cornerstones of many successful deployments. Its success is not complete, however, as the members of Liberty recognize that more work can be done to increase capabilities and ease deployment complexities–particularly in terms of business and policy relationships–and increase rapid success.
With the deployment of Liberty Federation and Liberty Identity Web Services continuously increasing, the Liberty Alliance has tracked well over one billion Liberty-enabled identities and devices. But more adoption can be achieved through greater business understanding and universal levels of assurance, and trust between organizations in the levels of trust of various transactions. As such, members of the Alliance are working on the Identity Assurance Framework. It aims to break through the barriers to identity assurance growth, providing guidance for the support of mutual acceptance, validation, and life cycle maintenance of identity credentials across identity federations. The efforts of this group will lead to faster federations through clear, standard establishment of levels of assurance, and external bodies that certify the trust level of federation's transactions.
