Citi AI Summit 2026: Citi's path to responsible AI with measurable outcomes
I recently moderated a discussion with Citi Chief Technology Officer David Griffiths on how Citi is approaching AI—deploying it responsibly, at scale and in close alignment with business outcomes. Joined by Tim Ryan, Citi’s Head of Technology and Business Enablement, we discussed what it takes to embed AI into the core of a global financial institution and the lessons learned so far.
AI as a change agent
A clear theme from the discussion was that AI at Citi is not a standalone initiative. It is part of a broader business transformation that requires alignment across functions, disciplines and leadership.
Rather than optimizing individual tasks, Citi has focused on building foundational capabilities to enable sustained adoption. This includes robust infrastructure, strong governance and a consistent focus on soundness, compliance and security.
Scaling success and measurement
Citi’s technology organization is using AI to automate routine work, enabling developers to focus on higher-value tasks while increasing throughput and accelerating delivery.
At Citi’s scale, governance and risk management are essential. Early on, the organization recognized that waiting for perfect metrics could slow progress. The shift was toward enabling early adoption, learning quickly and refining controls in parallel. As David noted, responsible innovation does not mean moving slowly—it means moving deliberately, with safeguards in place from the start.
AI in practice and what lies ahead
The discussion concluded with examples of AI already in use across security operations, treasury, supply chain management and software development. Citi has cataloged hundreds of internal AI use cases, many delivering tangible benefits today.
Citi is taking a long-term approach to AI, embedding it into firm operations while maintaining the safety and soundness standards that have defined the bank since its inception. AI at Citi is about execution, partnership and delivering real value for clients. While still early in the journey, the foundation being built today will support Citi for years to come.
