Community Relations

From affordable housing and sustainable economic development to financial education, Citi's Global Community Relations work builds upon the company's 200-year history of service, success, and leadership. The Global Community Relations team, working closely with the Citi Foundation and our businesses, leverages Citi's tremendous resources to make communities around the world better because we are there.

At Citi, we believe in continuously engaging with our community partners in dialogue to proactively address key issues, particularly those facing low -and moderate-income communities. Our strategic programs provide our partners and their constituents with valuable resources to make a positive and sustainable impact.

Help for Homeowners
In response to the housing and mortgage crisis, Citi is diligently working with leaders in industry, government and communities to develop innovative programs and solutions to help homeowners in distress keep their homes. Through innovative programs like the Office of Homeownership Preservation and Citi Homeowner Assistance Program, Citi has helped approximately 715,000 U.S. homeowners, whose combined mortgages total approximately $79 billion, to avoid foreclosure since early 2007.

Community Development
Citi is committed to financially supporting the communities in which we live and work by providing capital in a way that is both aspirational and responsible. In 2003, we committed to financing $200 billion in affordable housing and community revitalization lending in the U.S. through 2010, and surpassed our goal just two years later. Our lending to date totals approximately $224.5 billion.

Community Partners
Working closely together, Citi supports the work of leading community organizations across the globe. We value our relationships with our partners and take seriously their concerns, input and advice. The results are innovative financial products and services that assist underserved individuals and families in their efforts to achieve new levels of financial independence, productivity, and economic well-being, as well as volunteer initiatives and programs to support their work. Working across geographies, issues and organizations, we strive to leverage our resources to continually make communities better because we are there.

Microentrepreneurship
Citi and the Citi Foundation has been supporting the expansion and evolution of the microfinance industry for decades; our funding has steadily increased along with that expansion. Over the past seven years, the Citi Foundation has contributed nearly $40 million in funding to microfinance institutions MFIs and microfinance networks which provide long-term, sustainable impact to low-income families and communities in more than 50 countries. Through our support of MFIs and microfinance organizations, we have established deep, multifaceted relationships that provide significant opportunities for us to contribute more than just dollars. We also support the microfinance industry through the volunteerism of our employees, who share their talents and experience with the communities they serve around the world.

Financial Education
In April 2009, Citi's Office of Financial Education celebrated the fourth anniversary of our unprecedented 10-year, $200 million global commitment to Financial Education. In 2007, Citi and the Citi Foundation invested nearly $36 million in 65 countries, for a total of almost $121 million to date – putting us well ahead of schedule. Combined, the Citi Foundation and Citi-sponsored programs last year touched the lives of nearly 9 million people worldwide.

Volunteerism
Volunteerism has long been an integral part of Citi's culture. For nearly 200 years, Citi's legacy of innovation and achievement has been part of the fabric of thousands of communities around the world. Every day around the world, our employees put their passion, talent, and expertise to work by helping organizations and causes they believe in, ultimately helping to improve their communities.
