Citi has very deep roots in Mexico. The National City Bank opened its first branch in Mexico City in 1929.

Citi was one of two banks that remained in Mexico after a local legislation introduced heavily restrictive provisions for foreign banks.

Citi (The National City Bank of New York) was the only active foreign-owned bank that remained in Mexico.

During the 1970s, Mexico Citi (First National City Bank) became a key provider of international government loans.

Citi was the only private institution not affected by bank nationalization.  Consequently, Citibank received important amounts of deposits and investments and becomes a pioneer of private banking services in Mexico.

August 6, Citigroup bought Banamex, the most iconic institution in the Mexican market, for $12.5 US billion, in the largest corporate operation in Mexico's financial history at the time.  

In January, Citi announced its intention to sell its consumer, small business, and middle market banking operations in Mexico, and maintain its institutional and private banking businesses.   

In December, Citi announced the successful separation of its businesses in México and the start of Banco Citi Mexico’s operation.
