Citigroup reported net income of $5.2 billion, or $2.85 per diluted share, on revenues of $23.8 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This represented the best third-quarter revenue in a decade, up 8% year-over-year, with growth in Services, Wealth, Markets and Banking. Return on tangible common equity (RoTCE*) was 11.5%, up 350 basis points from a year ago. As CEO Jane Fraser remarked on the third quarter earnings call, "Our overall performance continues to demonstrate the disciplined and consistent execution of our strategy."

Services was the standout, with revenues up 15% and RoTCE* of 31.2% (29.7% year-to-date), driven by Treasury and Trade Solutions and Securities Services. Wealth revenues rose 15% with RoTCE* of 14.3% and record net-new investment assets** of $38 billion. Banking revenues grew 6%, led by 77% growth in Equity Capital Markets. Asked on the third quarter earnings call why Services' returns remain so strong, CEO Jane Fraser described it as "a wonderful business in which we are the undisputed leader," pointing to "four pillars of further growth at high returns: deepening with existing clients, acquiring new clients... capturing share in... high-growth verticals, particularly the fintech space, as well as investing in next-generation platforms and solutions." She added that the combination creates a model "pretty almost impossible to replicate" — a true moat.

Yes. Citi is targeting above 11% RoTCE * for full-year 2026, and is tracking toward its near-term (2027-2028) goal of 11-13% RoTCE* and medium-term (2029-2031) ambition of 14-15%. When asked on the third quarter earnings call to put the quarter's results into context, CFO Gonzalo Luchetti said, "We haven't moved an inch from our Investor Day commitments. The near-term targets for returns... and we’ve also tested those for a range of environments... we're not expecting the sun always to be shining, the wind in our backs, and us walking downhill. We have tested that for a range of outcomes." He also noted Citi has raised its full-year guidance twice in the past 30 days, from the high end of 10-11% to "above 11%."

Citi continues to advance the Banamex divestiture. Following the sale of an additional 1.4% equity stake in August 2026, Citi has divested 49% of Banamex to date and is preparing for deconsolidation, which is expected in 2027.

Citi's Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio* was 12.8% as of September 30, 2026, approximately 120 basis points above its regulatory minimum of 11.6%. Tangible book value per share** rose 6% year-over-year to $101.59,and total assets grew to $2.9 trillion. CFO Gonzalo Luchetti described the underlying capital philosophy on the earnings call: "Our framework is that we hold capital for resilience and flexibility, and we deploy it for returns and to distribute it to shareholders." He added that this quarter was a proof point of that balance, noting Citi was able to "deploy our balance sheet to fuel  revenue growth... the improving returns year-on-year... and at the same time, return $4 billion of capital to shareholders... while still holding an appropriate cushion above the reg requirements."

Credit performance remains strong. Net credit loss and delinquency rates in the overall U.S. Cards portfolio declined year-over-year, and 86% of card balances are held by consumers with FICO scores of 660 or higher. Corporate exposure is 79% investment grade, with corporate non-accrual loans and net credit losses remaining low. Citi holds over $22 billion in total reserves, a 2.5% reserve-to-funded-loan ratio. Asked on the third quarter earnings call  about how rising rates might affect customers, CEO Jane Fraser said, "we do have the luxury at Citi that we have a very investment-grade heavy client base on the institutional and a prime heavy on the consumer front. We have a high-quality client base." CFO Gonzalo Luchetti added that current credit trends reflect "both a combination of the resilience playing through, but also our risk appetite framework and our strategy working."
