This June, Citi will mark the 20th anniversary of Global Community Day, an annual campaign to give back to our communities through service. As we commemorate this milestone, we recognize many of the community organizations working each and every day to address pressing local needs, and without whose collaboration Global Community Day would not be possible.
Since 2017, Citi has worked with U.S. Hunger, a hunger relief organization, to coordinate year-round volunteer events across the country, including many flagship Global Community Day activities. Citi volunteers, together with friends, family and alumni, participate in large-scale food packing events known as “Hunger Projects” to support the 1 in 10 US households experiencing food insecurity. These events have a tangible impact for the communities that U.S. Hunger serves and are high-energy, team-building experiences for volunteers. The packed meals are then distributed to community members through local food banks and food rescue organizations.
Together, Citi and U.S. Hunger have also helped pack and deliver food during times of crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic when we couldn’t gather in-person, Citi volunteers participated in virtual food banking events. U.S. Hunger sent lists of shelf-stable food to volunteers who then shopped and packed the boxes for a local food pantry. More than 200,000 servings of food were delivered through these efforts. In 2022 and 2024, Citi’s work with U.S. Hunger went international, with Citi volunteers packing nearly 700,000 meals for distribution in Ukraine.
As a longtime Citi volunteer, I’m proud to reflect on what we have accomplished with U.S. Hunger over the years. To learn more about our collaboration and the 20th anniversary of Global Community Day, click here.
“Participating in the Hunger Project meal-packing event last year was a fulfilling experience. I’m proud that our Citi colleagues came together to bring nutritious meals to those in need. Global Community Day is an annual tradition here at Citi, with many worthwhile events to choose from. I encourage my colleagues around the globe to make the time to participate.”
"At U.S. Hunger we truly believe that we are better together, and our mission wouldn't be possible without partners like Citi. Because of your generosity, families in need are receiving the help they deserve. Thank you for joining the fight against hunger!"
"Last year, we received a pallet of meals from Citi 's Global Community Day project. We distributed the meals to neighbors in Washington, D.C., facing food insecurity. Jambalaya is a great meal for our community because it contains nutrient-dense food and is easy to prepare. Our neighbors appreciated it, and many commented on how easy it was to make and how delicious it was. Thank you so much, Citi!"
“City Harvest is proud to be a longstanding partner of Citi’s Global Community Day. Over the last five years, Citi and U.S. Hunger have generously donated enough meals to help feed more than 59,300 New Yorkers in need, and we frequently hear from our food pantry and soup kitchen partners that these meals are a highlight among the community members they serve. This ongoing support is vital as we continue to work together to bring high-quality, nutritious food to our NYC neighbors.”
