At one point, 40 percent of streetlights in Detroit didn't work, making life even more difficult in a bankrupt city. So, Citi stepped up with our own capital to help the Public Lighting Authority of Detroit install thousands of new LED lights, paving the way for similar projects around the world.

To alleviate the growing congestion in Panama City, the Government made building a mass transit system a priority. Citi worked with government leaders to arrange financing for the Panama Metro project. The end result: Better access to jobs and healthcare services, as well as reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center houses the history and culture of people of African descent. But it urgently needed renovations. In Ulan Bator, Mongolia, many use inefficient cook stoves that cause air pollution. With Citi's help, MicroEnergy Credits partnered with a microfinance institution to distribute clean-burning, fuel-efficient cook stoves. Today, more than 100,000 Mongolian households use them.

Tomorrow's leaders need to be nurtured today. That's why Citi worked with the City and County of San Francisco to develop the Kindergarten to College program, enabling every child who enters kindergarten in the San Francisco Public School District to save for college with an incentive of $50 to start. So far, $5 million has been raised.
