Following close to 400 suggested names, seven shortlisted options, a global Citi poll in which over 6,000 votes were cast and three top-voted names selected, Citi's baby elephant has finally picked his own name!
He has chosen to call himself Denra or "most outstanding in the world" in Thai.
Using his trunk, Citi's baby elephant made his choice from the three top voted names - Denra, Suriya and Winston - at the Citi Elephant Nursery in the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Chiang Rai, Thailand on April 20 with CCO Thailand Darren Buckley in attendance. As with Thai tradition, Denra is now the baby elephant's nickname and the name he will go by.
It was a quick choice for baby Denra, who immediately made his pick after being presented with three pieces of sugarcane, with a name pasted on each, by Darren and Anantara Resorts' Director of Elephants John Roberts.
Set up in July 2013 through a joint initiative between Citi Thailand, the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort as well as the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, the Citi Elephant Nursery was established to improve and raise awareness around elephant conservation in Thailand.
With donations from Citi Thailand colleagues, special custom-made baby elephant toys and a training area have already been specially set up for baby Denra and future baby elephants. To ensure the proper care and nurturing of young elephants, support remains crucial.
