Citi in Ukraine supporting UNICEF in provision of critical healthcare services for children in Ukraine

March 07, 2024

Since December 2023, Citi has partnered with UNICEF to bring better health care to every child in Ukraine. Citi donated $1,1 million to the UNICEF’s program. This support provides improved healthcare services for babies and mothers, and supports routine vaccination.

UNICEF, with support from Citi, is responding to the humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable children and mothers affected by the war in Ukraine. This 18-month initiative provides health care services and support to newborns and their mothers and ensures vaccine availability across Ukraine, particularly in hard-to-reach frontline locations.

Alexander McWhorter, Citi Ukraine’ Country Officer, said: "During the two years of the invasion in Ukraine, it is more important than ever to strengthen immediate medical assistance for the civilians. Children are a particularly vulnerable category, especially those living in remote or frontline areas and thus having limited access to health care. We are proud to contribute to UNICEF efforts, confident that it will significantly improve the lives of children in need.”

“Access to quality health care is crucial for children to have a better start in life and for their long-term well-being. Despite the challenges presented by the war, UNICEF continues to prioritize children’s early development and the availability of health care services for families with small children. We are grateful for Citi’s shared support of these goals,” says Munir Mammadzade, UNICEF Representative to Ukraine.

Since the war escalated in February 2022, civilians have been directly impacted. Citi, together with UNICEF, is committed to supporting Ukraine’s affected communities. Since February 2022, Citi and the Citi Foundation have donated over $4.5 million to support humanitarian efforts, including rehabilitation of schools, the provision of legal and psychosocial counselling to women as well as assistance to Ukrainian refugees to find safe shelters in other countries.
